We are an eco-friendly program of the Corvallis Environmental Center, a nonprofit organization, and we are reliant on grants, program fees, and donations to fund our classes. We teach children about conservation by example. We only use cloth towels, all natural cleaners, natural hand soaps (paraben and fragrance free), and sturdy dishes. We compost our scraps and recycle paper and plastics.
Avery House has been offering nature programs for preschoolers for over 10 years. In addition to our focus on environmental education, we include math concepts such as counting and measurement, early literacy through exploration of letters and sounds, and social skills like sharing and teamwork.
We go outside, EVERY day…
We respect and encourage each student’s outdoor curiosity. Often it is the students that direct the outdoor play, investigation, or hike. Instructors support the students’ creativity and interest.
Research has shown that direct contact with the natural world provides numerous benefits to students, including improvements in emotional and physical health, creativity, concentration, and classroom behavior (www.childrenandnature.org).
